On April 9, 2014 the Shenandoah Conservatory Bass Ensemble, directed by Dr. Donovan Stokes, premiered a new work “Bass Quartet” by 12 year old composer Zev Malina. The work was commissioned by Inez WyrickDonovan Stokes and the Bass Coalition.

This four movement, 18 minute work shows not only a love of our noble instrument, but a burgeoning understanding of the double bass and its potential in homogeneous chamber ensemble. The performance will appear soon on Youtube.

Young Mr. Malina (of Harrisburg, PA, is son of conductor Stuart Malina and bassist Marty Malina. Stuart Malina is the conductor of the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra, a sought after guest conductor and arranger, as well as the recipient of a Tony Award for his work on Billy Joel’s “Movin’ Out.”Mrs. Malina is known to the bass community for her early work on maintaing body fitness for double bassists. Young Zev, in addition to being a composer, is already an accomplished pianist exploring both classical and jazz realms. The bass world looks forward to more works for bass from Zev!
